Fire It

NFPA, US home fires 2018–2022

3 in 5 home fire deaths happen where there was no working smoke alarm.

Don't let you or your loved ones be next.

Fire It tells steam from smoke, says out loud what it found, and lets you hush a false alarm with your voice or your phone.

Burnt toast, not a fire

Shout “snooze”. Or tap your phone.

Nobody should have to climb a chair and wave a towel at the ceiling. Fire It hushes a false alarm two ways, without leaving the stove.

01 · Microphone

Say it out loud

“SNOOZE”“STOP”

Either word hushes the horn. The microphone listens only while the alarm is sounding. Recognition runs on the alarm itself: no cloud, no recording, nothing streamed.

02 · Wi-Fi

Tap snooze on your phone

The alarm runs its own small Wi-Fi network with a control page. Join it from your phone, the page opens, and you press Snooze. No app to install, no account to create.

How we tested
794 recordings from voices the detector never heard, with the alarm blaring. It still mistakes “shop” and “top” for “stop”, which is the next thing we're fixing.

Alarms get disabled because they shriek at a frying pan, and they get ignored because a chirp doesn't tell you what's wrong. Fire It is built around those two failures: tell steam from smoke, and say plainly what it found.

What it does

Five things that matter when the alarm goes off.

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide in one

One unit covers both hazards — no need to buy, install, or maintain separate alarms.

  • Tells steam from smoke, so burnt toast doesn't set it off

An optical chamber compares blue and infrared light to distinguish cooking steam from real smoke, the leading cause of nuisance alarms.

  • Says what it found, out loud — smoke, carbon monoxide, or low battery

A dedicated speaker announces the danger in plain words instead of a chirp you have to decode.

  • Hush it from the stove: say “snooze”, or tap Snooze on your phone

A microphone listens only while the horn sounds, and Wi-Fi lets you silence a false alarm from anywhere in the house.

  • Works without an app, an account, or a hub

No setup required. Mount it, press the test button, and it works. Voice and phone snooze are optional conveniences.

For the engineers
  1. 01

    Optical smoke chamber

    Analog Devices ADPD188BI

Two wavelengths of light, blue and infrared, look at what drifts into the chamber. Comparing them is how an optical sensor tells smoke apart from steam and dust, which is what makes most kitchen false alarms.

  2. 02

    Carbon monoxide cell

    SPEC 110-102 + TI LMP91000

An electrochemical cell, the type used in CO alarms, read by a dedicated low-noise front end. It sits behind its own nine-hole grille so gas reaches it without dust.

  3. 03

    Horn and voice

    Piezo sounder + 8 Ω speaker

A piezo horn for the alarm itself, and a separate speaker that says which danger it is: smoke, or carbon monoxide. Designed to meet 85 dBA at 3 m.

  4. 04

    Microphone and Wi-Fi

    INMP441 MEMS mic + Wi-Fi radio

A digital microphone that only matters while the horn is sounding, and a Wi-Fi radio so the alarm can be hushed from your phone. The microphone listens for "snooze" or "stop" only during an alarm; a notch filter removes the horn's own tone so the alarm can't hear itself.

  5. 05

    Power

    USB-C + CR123A backup

USB-C power with a primary lithium cell in a side drawer as backup. Designed to meet residential installation requirements.

For property managers, landlords and builders.

  • Fewer 3 a.m. calls

Tenants can hush a nuisance alarm themselves, so they stop pulling batteries. A disabled alarm is the failure mode behind the 59% statistic.

  • One device, both hazards

Smoke + CO in one unit. No app, no hub, no Wi-Fi setup per unit. Mount it and it works.

  • Know what the alarm said

It announces smoke, CO, or low battery out loud. A tenant's report is specific, not "it's beeping."
